UnderCurrent loves charts, so it was best pleased when it came across the TV sales figures by brand for May 2012. Normally a closely guarded secret, these figures offer a rare insight into the flat panel TV market, which is regularly described as being both fiercely competitive and largely unprofitable.

Some interesting take-outs from these figures include:

-Despite being on the way out, Sanyo’s unit sales grew 35 per cent year-on-year during May 2012.
-The only other supplier to grow unit sales year-on-year was Sony, up 8 per cent.
-TEAC sold more TVs that month than Panasonic.
-Take out 13 brands you’ve heard of, and ‘Others’ accounts for 26 per cent of total unit sales, indicating the strength of the house brands in this category.
-The five biggest selling brands by units, in alphabetical order, are: LG, Samsung, Sanyo, Sony and TEAC.

And the sum of all TVs units sold during May 2012? Just under 225,000.
