Eighteen months after kick-starting the colourful kitchen appliance trend with its Marc Newson Range, Smeg is finally introducing a long-awaited induction cooktop to its collection.

Available in 600- and 900-millimetre varieties, the Marc Newson induction cooktops (RRP $2,490 and $3,490) are in keeping with the incredible reputation forged by Australia's all time greatest designer, according to Smeg.

In addition to designing cooking appliances, Newson has designed a DSLR camera for Pentax, the New Year's Eve fireworks in Sydney and won the overall Australian International Design Award for his QANTAS A380 Economy Class seat.

The 600-millimetre model (SI644B) has four induction zones ranging from 1,400 to 3,100 watts. There are 15 heat settings, automatic pan recognition, delay timers and LED heat indicators.

Consumers that step up to the 900-millimetre unit (SI955B) will get all these features but with improved wattage: from 1,800 to 4,600 watts.

"The Marc Newson induction cooktops have outstanding energy, time and cost efficiencies," said a spokesperson "Induction has been recognised as the most fuel efficient form of cooking, even more so than gas."
