In an interesting crossover in the world of small appliances and whitegoods, Samsung Electronic’s American subsidiary has announced a new collaboration with SodaStream to produce a refrigerator with in-built sparkling water dispenser.

The Samsung RF31FMESBSR 36-inch Four-Door Refrigerator is billed as featuring “the industry’s first-ever automatic sparkling water dispenser”, powered by SodaStream, which is dispensed from the same area as the traditional still water and ice. The dispenser also uses a standard 60-litre SodaStream gas cylinder (currently available in Australia as an add-on to SodaStream’s range of benchtop drinks makers) which is stored in a concealed area inside the fridge door.

Speaking about this new concept in whitegoods was senior vice president of home appliances sales and marketing for Samsung Electronics America, Kevin Dexter.

“The new Samsung Four Door Refrigerator with a sparkling water dispenser reflects Samsung’s strong commitment to offering home appliances that not only meet consumers’ needs, but anticipate them in ways they never thought possible.

“By joining forces with SodaStream, we are able to offer our consumers something never before seen on a refrigerator and bring a new experience to the kitchen.”

And here's Daniel Birnbaum, CEO of SodaStream.

“This collaboration brings home carbonation to the next level, and we are excited to partner with Samsung to help bring our revolutionary technology to consumers,” said Birnbaum. “This product is a key milestone in a vision that represents the future for enjoying fresh carbonated beverages at home, easily made at the touch of a button, and without the clutter and waste that is produced by the old pre-packaged beverage industry.”

Local pricing is not yet available, but the product will go on sale in the United States in April for a recommended retail price of USD $3,899.
