Very loyal and long-standing readers might remember that almost six years ago, we reported on a 6-year-old Miami boy who survived a wash cycle in a front load washing machine.

Although we may perceive of washing machines as either being too small for children or children too smart to climb inside, this incident and several more tragic occurrences since, has led to ASKO developing a new door for its front loaders that can be opened from the inside, just in case the need arises.

Indeed, because front loaders need to have locked doors, unlike top loaders that can rely on gravity to keep the door closed, this feature is likely to become more prominent as washing machines get bigger and bigger. In the case of ASKO’s, it’s new W8844XL ECO Washer XL model features an 80-litre drum capable of a 10-kilogram load.

“Like all ASKO products, the new XL range is designed with your family’s safety in mind,” said national product manager James Vogdanos. “The machine’s door can also be pushed open from the inside if one of your little ones decides to crawl in. The detergent compartment is equipped with a colour coded and child lockable detergent drawer making it safe and easy to use.”

Other features include 15 washing programs, a 5-star energy rating and a 4.5-star WELS water rating. This washer is RRP $2,499.
