SYDNEY: LG Mobile Australia has signed up to sponsor Australia’s two largest professional surfing events; the men’s Quiksilver Pro and women’s Roxy Pro, for the second year.
The two events will be held at Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast from 27 February to 11 March 2009.
The Quiksilver Pro is expected to feature some of the world’s best surfers, including defending and nine-times ASP World Champion Kelly Slater and Australia’s own World Champion and 2008 finalist Mick Fanning.
A total of 48 surfers will carve it up for a share of US$430,000 in combined prize money and the lead in the race for the 2009 World Title. The Roxy Pro features the world’s top rated 18 female surfers.
LG Electronics Australia general manager of Mobile Communications, Nathan Dunn, saw the value in aligning LG Mobile with the local surfing industry.
“Australian surfers compete on a world class level and the industries’ following through print, broadcast and particularly online media is significant,” he said. “By partnering with this event, LG Mobile aims to reach the associated tech savvy youth market.”
LG Mobile will have a 10 m x 10 m interactive marquee featuring the latest phone handsets, as well as prize giveaways and a live feed of all the action at the Quiksilver Pro 2009.
Last year LG featured the Viewty phone at the Quiksilver Pro and this year LG will spotlight its new multimedia handset, the Renoir.
LG Mobile is also offering customers the chance to meet ASP World Champion Kelly Slater. Customers who purchase a Renoir between 1 January and 20 February 2009, can visit a dedicated microsite and complete an entry form telling LG how, in 25 words or less, they would capture the Quiksilver pro experience on their LG Renoir.
The most creative entry as judged by an independent panel, will win a trip for two to the Quiksilver Pro event where the winners will meet Slater and receive $500 spending money. Ten runner’s up will receive $100 Quiksilver vouchers.
