SYDNEY, NSW: Dyson and The Good Guys have launched a combined recycling and marketing drive, with consumers who bring in their old vacuum cleaners receiving a discount on a new Dyson model.

Throughout March, Dyson is encouraging consumers to think about what happens to their electrical appliances after their lifecycles end. With consumer electronics now becoming more commoditised, more old appliances are ending up as waste in landfill. In an attempt to curb this, Dyson is enticing consumers to trade in their old models for recycling whilst also receiving a push towards buying a new Dyson.

Participating consumers will receive 15 per cent off their new Dyson vacuum cleaner. As with all consumer promotions, it is best to check the Terms & Conditions for full details.

Planet Ark’s campaign manager Brad Grey said initiatives to stop products becoming waste were the manufacturers’ responsibility, regardless of what was legislated.

“It is important that manufacturers take responsibility for their products at the end of their life by putting in place collection and recycling programs,” he said “It’s not yet a legal responsibility but it is a moral one.”

In other small appliance news, Breville has released a new stick mixer that it thinks has solved the suction problem present in this category. Explaining this is Breville’s design and innovation director Richard Hoare.

“When using a stick mixer consumers have always assumed that suction is good. They feel it means the appliance is powerful,” Hoare said.

“A stick mixer with strong suction can lead to tired hands and wrists and it can be dangerous when blending hot liquids that can splutter. We wanted to be the first manufacturer to fix these problems.”

And apparently Breviile is the first manufacturer to fix these problems, with the new Control Grip range of stick mixers now out for Mother’s Day.

There are three models in the range:

Breville Control Grip (BSB510) RRP $119.
Breville Control Grip (BSB400) RRP $79.
Breville Control Grip (BSB310) RRP $59.
