Energy label reformation.
The November edict from the Federal Government mandating new testing regimens for washing machines is a positive move for retailers, delivering more confidence in how they communicate energy efficient benefits to customers.
The Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards (Clothes Washing Machines) Determination 2015 regulates the way brands communicate the size, capacity and energy ratings of washing machines they offer in Australia. The amendment also impacts the minimum energy requirements for the personal and domestic use of washing machines and contains a more flexible approach to where energy labels may be applied.
This affects the Energy Star rating and the water use index on the front of the machine for warm and cold washes. Energy stars are now based on 10 star ratings. While the legislation only applies to washers of 10kg or greater it is expected to apply to smaller capacities.
The capacity measured in kilograms has also had a ‘make-up of the test load’ applied to stop height weight but low volume skewing results. It now has to comprise a varied make-up including sheets, towels, table cloths, shirts, t-shirts, pillow cases, undershorts, wash cloths and handkerchiefs.
Samsung is one supplier which has seized the opportunity to support the new regulations.
“Samsung welcomes this move by Government which will allow us to better communicate how the emerging Ultra Large Capacity range of washing machines may benefit Australian households and lifestyles,” Samsung head of Home Appliances, Mike Lilly said.
“This presents a huge opportunity for Samsung and its retail partners to supply solutions that can help those households reduce the number of washes with a larger machine,” Lilly added.
