GoPro is taking fans even closer to the MotoGP action.

Beloved action camera GoPro has signed a 5-year partnership with the world’s top motorcycle racing competition, the MotoGP World Championship, becoming its Official Wearable Camera and the naming rights sponsor of the GoPro Motorrad Grand Prix of Deutschland (commonly called the German MotoGP).

The agreement was inked between GoPro and Dorna Sports, the commercial rights holder of the MotoGP.

As part of the agreement, bikes will be fitted with GoPro action cameras to deliver never-before-seen close-up action. GoPro will also film exclusive behind the scenes content for social media and MotoGP’s website.

“This announcement of the agreement between MotoGP and GoPro is just the start of an exciting partnership for both parties,” Dorna managing director Pau Serracanta told me. “GoPro is a great partner for the championship with their cameras brilliantly recording high-adrenaline racing right at the heart of the action. We look forward to working together closely over the coming years.”

GoPro founder and CEO Nick Woodman confirmed that he will be bringing the GoPro Experience to Australian MotoGP, held at Phillip Island in October.

“Racing has always been a part of GoPro’s heritage and it continues to influence our product design,” Woodman told me. “We hope to enhance the way race fans watch this premier series and look forward to MotoGP serving as an exciting platform for innovation.”

The GoPro Experience will also be showcased at the American, Spanish, Italian, German and British Grands Prix.

Motorsports have long been a popular sponsorship avenue for technology companies. Hisense and BlackBerry currently have deals in Formula One, while TEAC and Toshiba have sponsored V8 Supercar drivers.
