LG has turned its expertise in manufacturing TV displays to mobile phones with its latest smartphone offering the G3, which has a 5.5-inch Quad HD display that has four times the resolution of standard HD and more than 1.8 times higher than Full HD, with 538 pixels-per-inch (ppi).

In order to squeeze the number of pixels into the limited space of a mobile screen, LG reduced the size of each individual pixel by 44 per cent compared to the average pixel size of a Full HD display.

LG says the Quad HD display also contains more than 11 million sub-pixels, which is nearly twice that of a Full HD IPS display and almost three times greater than a Full HD AMOLED display.

Lambro Skropidis, general manager marketing, LG Electronics Australia said, “The G3’s breathtaking Quad HD display pushes the boundaries of traditional smartphone display technology and underlines LG’s credentials as leading innovators in the mobile sector. Supported by an optimised battery that makes it ideal for everyday use and incredibly comfortable in the hand, the G3 offers not only the best resolution available, but real user benefits. ”

When it comes to battery life, Full HD displays are estimated to consume 10-20 per cent more power than HD smartphone displays. However LG has included software optimisations which it says makes the G3’s battery life “20 per cent more efficient.”

Firstly, by using Adaptive Frame Rates, unnecessary energy consumption can be minimised. When you are looking at a still image, for instance, the display uses less energy than a standard Quad HD display. Secondly, Adaptive Clocking reduces battery consumption through CPU clock optimisation, and finally, Adaptive Timing Control optimises display energy consumption.

LG has also worked on maximising the screen size without leading to a bulkier form factor. Thanks to slim bezels around the screen the 5.5-inch Quad HD display takes up more than 76 per cent of real estate at the front of the phone.

The LG G3 will be available in Australia from the beginning of August. Australian customers will be able to purchase the LG G3 via all local operators (Telstra, Optus and Vodafone.) Details of retailers and pricing will follow in the near future.
