SYDNEY, NSW: Nintendo has today announced that its DS series of handheld gaming consoles have now sold three million units in the Australian market. This makes it the biggest selling console game in Australian history.

There is a caveat, however, with Nintendo combining the sale of all four of its individual DS units: the original, the Lite, the DSi and XL; into one overall sales figure. That’s the same as Sony rolling its three PlayStation devices into one overall sales figure and claiming some abstract milestone.

Regardless of this, the DS has been a big hit for Nintendo in Australia. The next instalment in the DS console series is the 3DS, which currently has a March 2011 release date. Before that, it will be released in Japan on 26 February 2011.
