HP has announced the expansion of a worldwide voluntary replacement program for battery packs used in certain HP Pavilion, Compaq Presario, HP and HP Compaq notebooks that could pose a potential safety hazard.

HP and the battery cell manufacturer identified a defect in assembled battery packs shipped in notebook PC products manufactured between August 2007 and May 2008.

HP considers the defect to pose a potential safety hazard as the battery can overheat posing a fire and burn hazard.

Users are advised to immediately stop using notebooks with affected battery packs.

Customers impacted by the recall are eligible to receive a replacement battery pack for each verified, recalled battery pack at no cost.

Customers can locate the notebook’s product number and serial number on the service tag on the bottom of the devices.

HP has set up a website for the electrical safety recall, www.hp.com/support/BatteryReplacement and customers can also get assistance by calling HP’s customer care centre on 131 047.
