SYDNEY: Samsung Australia today kicked off its search to find an “inspirational local hero” to represent Australia as a torchbearer in the Beijing 2008 Olympic torch relay next April.
The Australian selected will carry the Olympic flame through Canberra on 24 April 2008 in one of the final stopovers before the torch heads to Beijing to complete its “Journey of Harmony”.
Samsung is a Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay Worldwide Partner, and is calling on Australians to nominate an individual who has made a significant contribution to the community through sport, education or culture and is a role model inspiring others to strive for excellence.
“Every day Australians are making a contribution to society by helping others in need or overcoming personal challenges,” said Samsung general manager – corporate marketing, Kurt Jovais.
“These individuals embody Australia’s unique spirit, and most importantly serve as role models or heroes to those around them. We are proud to be the worldwide partner of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay. Through this partnership, we are looking for those inspirational individuals who embody the best of the Australian spirit.”
The Olympic flame will be carried on the Journey of Harmony by no less than 19,400 Olympic torchbearers during its 33 day, 40,000 kilometre journey from Olympia to Mount Qomolangma (Mount Everest) on the border of China.

According to Samsung, the inspiration for the 2008 Olympic flame derives from the design of the Chinese “Lucky Cloud”, which symbolises harmonious existence. Its Qihong Red colour is a unique shade that was first used on lacquer-ware in China’s Han Dynasty, about 200 years ago.
