SYDNEY: Canon has released a new range of digital still cameras for Christmas including new PowerShot and Ixus models.

Canon’s PowerShot range has been expanded to include the PowerShot A650 IS and PowerShot A720 IS, which will be available from September.

The new PowerShot models incorporate some of the latest technology trends in digital compact cameras, including high sensitivity up to 1600 ISO, face detection technology, optical image stabilizer and 6x optical zoom.

“The versatile PowerShot A series is designed to be appealing and user-friendly for every photographer, regardless of their experience,” said Canon product manager – digital still cameras, Kimberley Langton.

“These new PowerShot cameras embody that tradition, as well as making some of the creative elements of a DSLR camera accessible in a compact point-and-shoot model.”

The style-oriented, compact Ixus range now includes the new flagship 12.1 megapixel Ixus 960 IS and the 8.0 megapixel Ixus 860 IS, which both feature optical image stabilization DIG!C III image processor and face detect with autofocus, auto exposure and flash.

Both models will be available in September, with prices to be confirmed.

Canon has launched the high-end PowerShot G9 compact, which sees the RAW image capture format reintroduced to the G series after it was discontinued on the previous model.

Shooting in RAW image mode gives tech-savvy users ultimate control of the ‘development’ of their images into jpeg files, rather than relying on the in-camera processor to set the parameters for the final output.

“The new Canon PowerShot G9 continues on Canon’s tradition in innovation and is a must-have for those serious about their photography,” said Langton.

“The combination of the classic body style, superior technology and restored RAW format, is a compelling offer for enthusiast photographers.”

Both Olympus and Panasonic are expected to unveil new products for their Christmas range in the next two weeks.
