Electrolux Design Lab competition to promote healthy living

SYDNEY: For the fourth consecutive year Electrolux will be running its Design Lab competition to promote and encourage young designers to create household appliances for the future.

The theme for the 2006 Design Lab competition is ‘Healthy Eating Habits in 2016’, which Electrolux hopes will inspire students to create food preservation and food preparation products to promote healthy living.

Yesterday, Breville announced an innovative award named after its late chairman, John O’Brien, which will provide the winning third-year industrial design student with a 12 month work placement with the company.

Like Electrolux, Breville also has a Sydney-based research and development office and will also be rewarding a student for designing a healthy food preparation appliance.

The Electrolux Design Lab competition, which will be open to design students from all over the world, attracted over 3,000 students from 88 countries last year with Australia contributing three of the 12 finalists.

A jury of internationally renowned and respected members of the design community will judge entries based on design and innovation as well as aesthetic appeal, emotional connection and functionality.

Competition finalists will be invited to the final award ceremony, in Barcelona, Spain in November, where the winner will be announced.

The final 12 entries from Design Lab 2005 will be on display at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney from 6 – 21 August 2006 as part of Sydney Design 06.
