John Murphy, a 32-year veteran of Winning Appliances, has today announced he will step down from his general manager role. John Winning, who is currently the CEO of Appliances Online and Big Brown Box has been appointed the new CEO.

After this change, which is effective 1 December 2011, Murphy will stay on as a non-executive director of Winning Appliances.

Murphy thanked both John Winning, and his father John Winning Senior, for their support and inspiration.

“I would like to thank the Winning family both past and present for giving me opportunities and success I could never dreamt of as a younger man,” Murphy said. “John Winning senior has been an inspiration to me, and his son John is now in a position to take the reins and work closer with me and the wider management team with the bricks and mortar part of the ever expanding Winning Group of Companies.”

John Winning represents the fourth generation of the Winning family to head the famous appliance retailing brand. In his role at the helm of Appliances Online, Winning has greatly innovated the company, taking it from a traditional bricks and mortar retailer to a multichannel player with significant gains in the online space.

“Building Appliances Online has enabled me to develop close relationships with whitegoods and appliance suppliers, the business community and industry leaders,” Winning said.

“While the online retail space is vastly different to bricks and mortar retail, both businesses have the same dedication to customer service and I believe this has been vital to both businesses success.

“John Murphy has been involved in the business for longer than I have been alive, and I am grateful that I will have an opportunity to work closely with him as I become more involved in the day-to-day running of our eight retail stores across New South Wales and Queensland.

For the future, Winning reinforced his view that bricks and mortar and online retailing can coexist peacefully and prosperously.

“We have a strong vision for the future, and over the next 12 months Winnings will grow to open bricks and mortar stores in other regions.

“Despite many reports, our experience is that bricks and mortar retailing is not in dire straits. On the contrary, Winning Appliances has weathered several wars, The Depression and recessionary periods, and we plan to continue growing.”
