Kmart’s online customers hacked

Kmart’s online operations have been hacked in a security breach that exposed some customers’ personal information according to Fairfax Media. An email sent to a Kmart online customer on September 30 advised that her account had been compromised during an “external privacy breach”.

Williams-Sonoma online sales growing faster than its B&M stores

US homewares and small appliance retailer Williams-Sonoma, which entered the Brisbane market in April, has seen its global online sales outpace its competitors. E-commerce at Williams-Sonoma is growing faster than traditional retail sales, 9.1% versus 7.9% according to the company’s last quarter results with operating margins on internet sales around three times as big.

Appliances Online has increased its foot traffic significantly in the last three years since partnering with Rakuten Marketing. The retailer’s head of marketing, Trent Allan says affiliate marketing enables businesses to boost revenue and click-through rates, while gathering a more holistic picture of the customer journey online in buying appliances.

New stores, online growth drive Myer sales

New stores and refurbishments, along with an impressive online growth rate of 80% during FY15 were to thank for Myer’s 1.7% increase in total sales to $3.2 billion. The ‘click and collect’ business grew by 183% and sales on iPads in stores reached $20 million in the first 11 months, according to a company statement on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX).

Bing Lee puts a turbo behind online

Bing Lee is the latest retailer to be signed as a customer on the Ominvore retail platform for up and coming Australian IT company, City Beach Software, joining Dick Smith and Super Cheap Auto. The customer list has now reached 500 in just three years. City Beach will also be partnering with property group heavyweight Lend Lease for use of its platform for online shopping channels.

Appliance retailers are facing a dilemma as the country’s treasurers meet today to discuss lowering the Goods and Services Tax low-value threshold (LVT). On the one hand, such a move could lead to consumers paying a new ‘parcel pick-up tax’ when buying from small online retailers and impact sales. While, on the other, it will level the playing field for Australian-based retailers to ensure future viability and global relevance.
