SYDNEY, NSW: Current.com.au has been among the first in the world to get a glimpse of Sony’s new direction in digital imaging at this morning’s launch of its new NEX-3 and NEX-5 interchangeable lens cameras.

Effectively a combination of compact DSC and DSLR technologies, the cameras are designed to bridge the gap for consumers who are looking for superior imaging but who don’t want to purchase a full DSLR.

The new cameras represent Sony’s own take on the micro four thirds digital imaging technology that is designed to appeal to the same consumers.

“If you’ve outgrown a point and shoot camera or are just looking to upgrade, the NEX-3 and NEX-5 offer a natural transition for your digital needs,” said product manager for α camera, Sony Australia, Maurice Satya.

“Designed for every consumer, be it novice photo enthusiasts or seasoned professionals.”

Billed by Sony as the world’s smallest and lightest interchangeable lens cameras, both the NEX-3 and NEX-5 take DSLR quality photos with a 14.2 megapixel image sensor, as well as Full HD videos  in AVCHD or MP4 formats.

In addition, both cameras feature a 3D panoramic mode which allows images to be viewed on a Sony Bravia 3D TV.

Sony said that the NEX-3 and NEX-5 have also been designed with user friendliness in mind, with the company’s senior product specialist, digital imaging, Nicholas Villani, saying at this morning’s launch that the cameras are designed to be used by all consumers.

“This is one of the simplest cameras you can pick up and operate.

“This is the pinnacle of Sony innovation.”

The NEX-3 will be available in July for RRP $999, while the NEX-5 will hit the market in late June for RRP $1,199.
