Sony has launched global recall of four models in its VAIO notebook range. Foreign media reports state that over 440,000 notebooks may be affected.
The recalled notebook models are:
-VGN-TZ100 series
-VGN-TZ200 series
-VGN-TZ300 series
-VGN-TZ2000 series
“The issue involves a small number of units which may overheat due to a wiring problem,” said Sony Electronics vice president, VAIO, Mike Abary in a statement. “Sony has initiated a voluntary program to perform a free inspection and, if necessary, a repair to ensure these units meet our high quality standards.”
In a statement released by Sony Australia today, a spokesperson said that “This [recall] has the potential to affect models which were sold between May 2007 and July 2008”.
This statement also expands on the faulty notebooks, saying that “within certain units of its VAIO "TZ series" notebook, a symptom may arise in which the unit’s plastic could be deformed in the DC jack inlet or LCD surrounding area due to extreme high temperatures”.
Australian customers are advised to visit Sony’s Australian website in order to check if their notebook is affected.
Sony is offering a free inspection and repair service, if needed, on any model covered by the affected serial numbers.
