SYDNEY: Canon’s newest DSLR camera, the EOS 1000D, replaces the 400D and has been developed using consumer feedback to specifically overcome the typical barriers to entry of consumers into the DSLR market.
Findings from the Usage and Attitude Study for Canon 2007 indicate that 43 per cent of people intending to buy a camera are considering a DSLR. However, the report also identified a number of key barriers to entry in the DSLR market.
“These barriers are that DLSR Photography is very complicated, it’s involving, it’s expensive, and it’s for professionals,” said Canon Australia product manager DSLR, Chris MacLeod.
Canon is aiming two models at the entry level, the EOS 450D and now the EOS 1000D.
“The 1000D is an entry-level model that is packed full of essential features and what this camera enables consumers to do is to easily walk into DSLR,” said Macleod. “It simplifies the whole process for them and provides them with the essential features to get into DSLR very easily.”
The main features of this model are the 10.1 Megapixel CMOS Sensor, DiG!C III Image Processor with 12-bit colour, Live View Mode, EOS Integrated Cleaning System, and the ability to shoot at three frames per second (and up to 514 shots in a continuous burst in JPEG file format).
According to Macleod, Live View is one key feature that makes the step into DSLR less daunting to the consumer thinking of stepping up.
“This camera allows you to preview images and focus in the Live View screen and a lot of people are already familiar with this feature on their compact digital cameras,” Macleod said. “But if they’re not familiar with DSLR they’re already expecting a Live View function like on their compact digital camera and with Canon DSLRs they can preview the pictures in real time.”
While pricing is yet to be announced, Canon said it will be available in late July through Canon dealers nationally.
“The 1000D is the key model which we’re pushing this year,” added Macleod. “It’s replacing the previous best-selling 400D and we really see this as the biggest opportunity with the highest growth area, especially for Canon.”
