Following Dick Smith’s recall of four house-branded portable DVD players yesterday, Big W has also recalled an AWA-branded portable DVD player due to similar problems with the internal battery. Big W and Dick Smith were formerly owned by the same parent company, Woolworths Limited, until Woolworths sold Dick Smith to Anchorage Capital Partners in September.

The AWA 7-inch portable DVD player was sold at Big W stores nationally between 29 January and 27 July 2012, and can be identified by the Model Number TV-3245-D7 on the base of the unit. The DVD player was sold in an AWA Home Entertainment Full High Definition Pack with an LED LCD Television, but the TV is not affected by the recall.

According to the recall notice, “Results from external testing indicate that under certain conditions the internal lithium-ion rechargeable battery may overheat, ignite and explode,” and that this could cause a potential fire hazard.

Customers are advised to immediately stop using the product and return it to any Big W store for a refund. Big W customer service can be contacted on 1300 244 999.
