Samsung Electronics Australia has announced the signing of star swimmer James Magnussen as its new spokes-athlete in the lead up to the London 2012 Olympic Games. As part of his new role, the gold-medal hopeful will star in Olympic-themed advertising across television, print and online, whilst also making appearances for the Samsung brand.

Talking up Magnussen’s association with Samsung Australia was the company’s vice president of telecommunications, Tyler McGee.

“As one of this country’s most competitive, inspirational and passionate swimmers, James Magnussen is a great fit for the Samsung brand and the perfect way to bring our involvement with the London 2012 Olympic Games to life in Australia,” said Mcgee.

“As a provider of state-of-the-art electronics that help inspire Australians through innovation and design, we believe that James will showcase the positive way in which technology is changing our lives.”

Magnussen’s sponsorship deal with Samsung falls under a wider Olympic association, with the brand holding the title of “global wireless communication partner” with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) and Australian Olympic Team.

“I am excited to partner with the Samsung team as an ambassador,” said Magnussen of the deal. “Samsung is an incredibly impressive global brand with an amazing range of advanced technology that I have already incorporated as part of my training.

“As a key Olympic sponsor, it’s great to have their support in the year of the London 2012 Olympics.”

While Magnussen continues preparing for the Olympic competition, it is clear that he is fully trained in the art of spruiking Samsung.

“Currently, my favourite Samsung product is definitely the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1,” he said. “I use it to plan my day and enjoy movies and music when I get a break, but more importantly, technology plays a vital role in my training regime.

“My coach uses the Galaxy Tab 10.1 as part of my training – without giving away too many trade secrets, we have the ability to film my stroke and I then get instantaneous feedback from my coach. Access to such technology and techniques could make all the difference in such a competitive race as the 100 metres Freestyle.”

For Samsung’s part, McGee said the company was “thrilled to hear that James and his coach have already successfully incorporated a number of Samsung products into his daily routine to help improve his training techniques”.

Samsung’s new spokesperson, James Magnussen, was no doubt chosen on swimming talent alone.
