Telstra has announced that it is increasing the speed of its Next G network. Already the fastest on the market, the new upgrade will allow consumers to achieve uplink speeds of up to 5.8Mbps.
“These increased uplink speeds complete our initial HSPA+ equation, giving our customers download and upload speeds that are at the cutting edge of commercial mobile technology,” said Michael Rocca, group managing director, Telstra Networks and Services.
“Our customers are already used to very fast mobile broadband download speeds and now they will be able to send emails and upload files and photos up to three times faster than today.”
While the boasted uplink speed is 5.8Mbps, Telstra commented that customers will achieve upload speeds less than this figure, approximately 300kbps – 3Mbps. But consumers are warned that these speeds will only be effective for customers in capital cities, metropolitan areas and selected regional locations. Other areas will have speeds of 300kbps – 1Mbps.
Ross Fielding, executive director, Telstra product manager, also commented that business customers using Telstra Turbo 21 mobile broadband USB will be able to download an upgrade for their device to take advantage of the new speeds.
“World first device technology developed in conjunction with Sierra Wireless will give existing customers with Telstra Turbo 21 devices access to the higher uplink speeds from today,” he said.
“This upgrade is a result of the continued partnership between Telstra, Ericsson, Qualcomm and Sierra Wireless that is fostering world leading network, device and chipset innovation.”
