Skype has finally announced that its highly anticipated ‘Skype for iPhone’ application will now be available on iTunes for iPhone and 2nd Generation iPod Touch users, to make communicating even easier.

Scott Durchslag, Skype COO commented that its software for the iPhone has been the number one request among its users and he showed a lot of enthusiasm about the announcement.

“We are delighted to deliver on this request and put Skype into the pockets of millions of people around the world who are carrying iPhone and iPod Touch devices,” he said.

“Skype for iPhone will open up new ways for more than 400 million Skype users to stay connected and take their Skype conversations with them.”

The application comes with all the core capabilities found in usual Skype services like free Skype-to-Skype calls over Wi-Fi, low rate calls to landline and mobiles, send and receive instant messages, and see when your Skype contacts are online.

“Skype for iPhone is an experience that offers the same simplicity, ease-of-use and quality our users have come to expect from Skype, combined with an elegance of design and richness so loved by Apple’s many worldwide customers,” Durchslag said.

The main benefit of this new application for iPhone users is the fact that you can make free calls to other Skype users over a Wi-Fi connection, and only pay a minimal fee to call landline or non-Skype mobile users.

But even though Skype does not charge for its services, the company has warned users that they should make sure that they are on an unlimited data usage plan, due to the fact that users will still be charged by their wireless service provider.

The application is available for both devices by a free download on the Apple App Store or at www.itunes.com/appstore/.
