Sony Australia has told Appliance Retailer it is maintaining the status quo and will not be following as Sony US begins to dismantle its direct sales operations and exit its US e-commerce site at the end of August.

“The US announcement regarding Sony closing its online store does not affect the Australian or NZ online store which will continue to operate as usual,” Sony ANZ,  Head of Direct Business & Customer Communications, Jun Yoon (pictured) Sonysaid.

As we reported on Wednesday August 6, the US online Sony Store, store.sony.com, will close on August 28, a move that follows the closure of  nine of  Sonys 10 remaining company stores this year, according to US industry media twice.com. The remaining Sony New York showroom is also expected to close after being sold to a real estate developer.

In Australia, Sony has two Sony Kiosks, one at the Chatswood Westfield and the other  at the Parramatta Westfield. Yoon has advised that there are no plans to close these.

In the US however, Sony has said it plans to replace its online store with an information-only website that showcases products and hands over interested shoppers to authorized retailers.
