Consumers buying a Blu-ray player from a selected range this Christmas will receive an extra gift – five bonus Blu-ray movie titles.

The redemption offer is a promotion first from the Australian Blu-ray Disc Working Group that comprises CE retailers, IT, media and hardware manufacturers.

Consumers can choose one movie from each of five major Hollywood studios when they purchase a Blu-ray player from Panasonic, Pioneer, Samsung, Sharp and Sony. The promotion began on October 1 and continues until December 31, 2007.

The Group claims Blu-ray is already the most popular next-generation optical disc format for high definition in Australia. Quoting GfK data figures for Q2, 2007, 87.3 per cent of films sold were Blu-ray Disc compared to 12.7 per cent in HD-DVD.

According to Group chair, Michele Garra: “There has never been a better time to get on board with Blu-ray.”

She said the offer demonstrates how broad the support is for this format from leading hardware manufacturers and studios that enables Australians to experience the future of home entertainment in their lounge rooms right now.

“With so many phenomenal Blu-ray players on the market and a further 50 Blu-ray titles being released before the end of the year, this is the perfect opportunity to bring Blu-ray home for Christmas,” Garra said.

Qualifying products will be clearly identified in participating stores.

Blu-ray players included in the promotion are: Panasonic DMP-BD10A, DMP-BD10; Pioneer BDP-LX70, BDP-LX70A; Samsung BDP-1000, BDP-1400; Sharp BDHP20X and Sony BDP-S1E, BDP-S300 and BDP-S500.

Following the purchase, consumers can make their choice of one film from each of the five following studios, which they will receive in the mail: Disney – The Wild, Dinosaur, Sky High; Fox – Entrapment, Fantastic Four, Ice Age 2: The Meltdown, Kingdom from Heaven; MGM – Rocky, Rocky Balboa, Hart’s War; Sony Pictures – Casino Royale, Open Season, Ghostrider, Black Hawk Down, Hitch; Warner Bros. Entertainment – Corpse Bride, Blazing Saddles, Superman: The Movie.
