Logitech has announced the release of Vid, a new free software that is attempting to make video calling and conferencing easier and push for higher market penetration.

According to Logitech, Vid simplifies video calling by offering a streamlined setup and a simple, intuitive interface dedicated to video calling. The company claims that setup requires fewer than half of the steps required by major instant-messaging programs.

“Video calling has been around for more than a decade, but Vid truly has the potential to make video calling one of the primary ways that people stay in touch with their loved ones,” said Gina Clark, general manager and vice president of Logitech’s Internet Communications business unit.

“Vid gives you the best of both worlds – eliminating the biggest obstacles to making video calls, while still providing the exceptional quality audio and video that you expect from Logitech.  Above all, you don’t need to be tech-savvy to use Vid.”

According to Logitech research, most people are turned away from video calling due to the frustration of complex software setup. Due to the fact that Vid is dedicated to video calling, it doesn’t have to rely on IM or VoIP programs, thus increasing usability.

Logitech Vid is available for any consumer who owns a Logitech webcam or anyone who is invited by a Logitech webcam owner. The software comes free with all new release webcams or is available for download at www.logitech.com/vid.
