Ever the innovator, Appliances Online, the web sales portal of Winning Appliances, is using Facebook to recruit new staff members. So far, almost 60 social networkers have applied to work at the company since this campaign was launched in late November.

Sources inside Appliances Online told us the privately owned company has grown its Appliances Online business from 20 staff members at the start of 2011 to 80 as the year draws to a close. Furthermore, BigBrownBox is being relaunched as a dedicated AV sales site, necessitating more recruitment.

People interested in working at these sites need to log on to Appliances Online’s Facebook page and submit a 200 word essay detailing their customer service experiences and skills. So far, almost 190,000 people have Liked Appliance Online on Facebook – a monumental amount – meaning this advertising push is reaching significantly more than some Australian metro newspapers.

“Staff are the biggest asset of any business,” said CEO John Winning. “We encourage all employees to own their role and change it wherever possible to benefit the company.

“We trust our staff to use their initiative and have created a fun work environment where every door is open. We are part of a team, continually innovating to provide Australians with an enjoyable, convenient and hassle-free shopping experience."

Meanwhile, Winning has used his very entertaining blog to welcome Harvey Norman online.

“Nothing validates this channel like a goliath of traditional retailing making a complete turn-around. Love him or hate him, Gerry Harvey is a key personality in Australian retail, and much of the company’s success has depended on the trust offline consumers have placed in Harvey Norman and their offering.”
