SYDNEY: Wireless payments system and CE distributor Mint Trading has taken over distribution of digital camera, tablet and photo frame maker Aiptek, following the unexpected cancellation of previous agency EAG’s contract.

Taiwan-based Aiptek International claims to be the sixth-placed digital video camera brand in the US, with products sold through Wal-Mart, Amazon and, outside the US, by French retail giant Carrefour.

Mint Wireless chief executive, Alex Teoh, said the distribution agreement was an opportunity for Mint “grow a strong presence in the market”.

“Mint is confident that the global uptake of Aiptek products is a precursor to a strong local sales performance. The Aiptek range enables us to bring more value, with unique products, to our existing customers and distribution channels, and it also opens up new markets with major consumer electronics retailers,” said Teoh.

Aiptek director, Willis Huang, said he was confident that “Mint will leverage their existing distribution channels to build a strong national presence and tap into the mass-market for keenly priced and high quality digital products”. understands that EAG (Electronics Australia Group) lost the Aiptek agency after just seven months when they received a text message on the eve of the Hong Kong Fair in April, terminating their distribution agreement effective immediately.

It is understood EAG had arranged meetings between Aiptek and Australian-based retailers including Target, Kmart and JB Hi-Fi at the fair prior to the text message.
