SYDNEY: Samsung Australia will again sponsor the World Cyber Games (WCG) which kicks off this weekend in New South Wales, Western Australia and Victoria and culminates in a worldwide final in October.
Samsung, the founding sponsor of the WCG, expects around 1,000 Australian gamers to register online this year for the chance to represent their state in the WCG.
The Australian qualifying series will commence this weekend and wrap up in late August.
Winners from each qualifier will then head to the national final at Sydney’s Luna Park, and vie for the opportunity to represent Australia at the grand final, which will be held at Quest Field Stadium in Seattle, USA in early October 2007, where competitors will face off in PC games including Counter Strike 1.6 and War Craft 3.
“At Luna Park, over 2,000 spectators will have the chance to witness Australia’s best gamers compete against each other. Gaming enthusiasts and those curious to see what the WCG is about will have the opportunity to test drive new games before they come to market and win Samsung prizes,” said Samsung in a press release.
Both team and individual winners will represent Australia at the Grand Final and compete against gamers from 69 countries in their respective games.
“Samsung is a founding sponsor of the WCG and we have seen the event grow in popularity significantly since 2000,” said Samsung Australia general manager – corporate marketing, Kurt Jovais.
“WCG represents the very best in competition gaming. Not only do we have advanced visual display technologies that are embraced by gaming competitors, but those competitors share a common ideal with Samsung – achievement and excellence in all things.”
