SYDNEY: LG Electronics has released a statement which welcomes the release of the Federal Government’s discussion paper on media reform.

According to LG Electronics category marketing manager of audio visual – Darren Goble, the discussion paper signals the commencement of an important consultation for stakeholders in the Australian media industry and expects the options flagged to stimulate significant interest and discussion.

"LG Electronics is pleased to see a pragmatic approach taken to the conversion from analogue to digital television in Australia. Our experience with consumers suggests a 2010-2012 conversion target is a more realistic timeframe for digital conversion in the Australian market,” said Goble.

"LG believes greater diversity in content will accelerate the voluntary uptake of digital services by Australian consumers. LG welcomes a number of these proposals, specifically the effective offering of a full HDTV channel.

"LG has always believed the consumer is best-placed to determine when digital services provide the incentive to convert, and today’s announcement puts them in the drivers’ seat.

"With the world going digital, it’s up to regulators and the industry to create an environment where digital applications provide the new and attractive media we have all been promising.  Put simply, consumers are entitled to a diverse digital content offer that is too good to refuse," Goble said.

"Today’s announcement foreshadows a framework where diverse and original content can play a more significant role in the advent of digital media in Australia. This is a positive step for government, industry and the consumers of Australian media."
