UPDATE at 13:13:

A Dyson ANZ spokesperson has advised that in the short circuit cases observed by Dyson, the fire has been wholly contained within the Air Multiplier and has not spread beyond the unit. Dyson advises that there is no need for any panic and that users simply need to follow the instructions at the recall website to fix the fault.

UPDATE at 11:50:

Dyson CEO Max Conze has confirmed that while there have been four cases of fire resulting from faulty Hot + Cool Air Multipliers there have been not been any injuries or property damage.

“We have sold a million heaters around the world; we have seen a small number short-circuit, which in four cases has resulted in contained burning,” Conze said. “Although there have been no instances of personal injury or damage to property, it’s four too many. So we are working with the relevant regulatory bodies and preparing for a voluntary recall. We ask owners to visit www.dysonrecall.com for further instructions.”

Dyson’s press office has advised that all colour varieties (iron/blue, white/silver, white/iron, iron/fuchsia, iron/purple, black/nickel, nickel/nickel) of AM04 and AM05 models are affected, but that no other model of Air Multiplier is subject to this recall. “Dyson’s Air Multiplier cooling fans are not affected: AM01, AM02, AM03, AM06, AM07 and AM08,” the company said, meaning that only models with a heating option are being recalled.

Dyson is recalling its AM04 and AM05 Hot + Cool Air Multipliers due to a short circuit hazard that could potentially result in fire. According to a Dyson spokesperson on its dedicated recall site, there have been several isolated instances leading up to this worldwide recall action, which is affecting over one million units globally.

We’re recalling all AM04 and AM05 heaters due to a potential safety issue. Out of a million heaters sold worldwide, we know of a small number that have short-circuited resulting in a small fire contained within the machine. There have been no instances of injury or property damage, but safety is our first priority.

That’s why we’re recalling all machines and implementing an engineering fix in each one.

Consumers with an AM04 or AM05 bladeless fan/heater are advised to immediately cease using the appliance and to unplug it from the wall. They should then complete the registration form on Dyson’s recall website to commence the product fix process, which is free is of charge.

We’ll send you a box, once the machine is packed up it should be dropped at your local Australia post office using the address details supplied for return. We’ll also give it a free full service and clean.

In addition to its dedicated recall website, Dyson Australia has also set up a dedicated hotline for consumers wanting to find out more. The number is 1800 500 499.

Dyson makes a point of noting that retailers cannot assist affected consumers with this recall. Consumers must contact Dyson directly via the website or the dedicated hotline.
