Dyson won the Best in Category award for the Domestic Appliances with the AM06 Cool Fan at the 2014 Good Design Awards presented at a gala event in Sydney tonight.

The AM06 isn’t available in Australia  yet although sources say it will be released here soon (ie when the weather starts to warm up again) along with the AM07 Tower Fan. The bladeless fan retails in the UK for the equivalent of AUD$450 and comes in black/nickel, iron/blue and white/silver.

The judges said:

The first Dyson Cool Fan was an incredible innovation and breakthrough product. Dyson’s designers and engineers went back to the drawing board and have now taken that to the next level. Shaving 75 per cent off the sound output is sure brilliance and is something that needs to be heard in person. This is an incremental innovation with a monumental outcome.

Accepting the award for Dyson, managing director Glenn Andrew said the company’s engineers spent three years redefining elements of the fan to improve it because “Dyson enjoys solving frustrations.”

“The frustration with the home product was that it was slightly noisy so they redesigned it and made it quieter, almost silent,” he said.

“It’s fantastic to see the excitement building for the launch of Dyson Cool in Australia. By awarding Dyson, Good Design Australia is backing people that invent, rather than those who copy and replicate.”

Dyson Cinetic DC54 vacuum cleaner won a Good Design Award in the same category as did a De’Longhi Panel heater and Electrolux Ergorapido cordless vacuum.

Other small domestic appliances which received a Good Design Award include the Electrolux Expressionist Kettle, Kenwood Blend-X Pro Blender, Kenwood Chefette Hand Mixer and Breville Oracle Espresso Machine.

Filiz Bensan from Kenwood was pleased with the two design awards the brand picked up.

“Such an acknowledgement is a great reflection of the Kenwood UK design team who continue to create products that inspire creative cooking.

“Kenwood has been at the forefront of design and innovation. The Blend X Pro was an evolution of years of ongoing research, performance testing and benchmarking. The Chefette is a very simple, functional but overall enjoyable product to use,” Bensan said.

The only major appliances to claim a Good Design Award were Fisher & Paykel’s 76cm Pyrolytic built-in oven and Miele’s Pure Line oven.

The category winners went into the running to be named the overall winner of the Good Design of the Year, which was won by Caroma Marc Newson Bathroom Collection, which was included in the Hardware and Building division.  This 22-piece bathroom set includes toilets, tapware, showers and a bath. Marc Newson, who has worked with Smeg in the past, also won the award in 2009 for his Qantas A380 Economy Class seat.
