During its virtual CES 2021 press conference, Samsung shared its vision for building a more sustainable future with programs and packaging solutions that promote a sustainable product life cycle and focus on education and accessibility.
Samsung has updated its Galaxy Upcycling program to Galaxy Upcycling at Home, which shows consumers how they can repurpose their Galaxy device to create various IoT tools.
Eco-packaging will expand to all 2021 Lifestyle, QLED and UHD TVs, select 2021 Neo QLED TVs, as well as monitor and audio products. This solution can upcycle up to 200,000 tons of corrugated boxes each year. Minimising text and graphic imagery on Eco-packaging also eliminates oil-based ink traditionally used on TV boxes.
Further, Samsung is reducing battery waste with its new Solar Cell remote control, available with its 2021 TV range, which can be charged via solar, indoor lighting or USB. This will help prevent waste from an estimated 99 million AAA batteries over seven years. The remote has been constructed with 24% recycled content.
Samsung is making its 2021 QLED and Neo QLED TVs even more inclusive and accessible with the latest advances in technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The SeeColours application is designed to help those with colour vision deficiency (CVD) adjust the settings on their 2021 QLED TVs for a better viewing experience, while the Sign Language Zoom feature allows deaf people to optimise their viewing to their needs and preferences.
More broadly, Samsung will seek to decrease its overall carbon footprint in TV manufacturing, use more recycled materials and lower user power consumption across its entire TV range.
Samsung is prioritising technology education through Samsung Solve for Tomorrow which encourages young people to use technology to solve community challenges, and Samsung Innovation Campus, which helps students develop technical and personal skills for future jobs.
Samsung Electronics Australia head of consumer electronics, Jeremy Senior said the company continues to break down barriers to a better future.
“Through this lens, we have reimagined the way we develop products and solutions which include our newly announced Solar Cell remote that removes the need for single-use batteries, our AI-powered washing machines that save water and power to extending our eco-packaging solution to all TV products,” he said.
