SYDNEY, NSW: Football superstar, Royal Wedding attendee and all-round nice guy David “Goldenballs” Beckham has signed on as Samsung’s new Olympic Games ambassador. Samsung is the Wireless Communications Equipment major sponsor of the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Beckham, who was born in London, has played for Preston North End, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Los Angeles Galaxy and AC Milan. Furthermore, he is the most capped outfield player for the England National Football Team. Whilst his speed down the right flank and lethal right boot from set pieces made him the hero of young men, his stunning good looks, designer hair styles and marriage to pop starlet Victoria “Posh Spice” Adams made him the first footballer to transcend into sheer celebrity status.

Things have not always been rosy for Becks, however, with the footballer thrice earning the ire of the Three Lions fans during major tournaments. In 1998, he was sent off against Argentina in the quarterfinal for retaliation — a game England would go on to lose in a penalty shootout. Then, in the 2004 European Championships, he missed a crucial penalty against France and his penalty in the shootout against Portugal.

Here is Samsung vice president and head of worldwide sports marketing Gyehyun Kwon discussing this ambassadorship.

“Sport has a unique power to reach people and bring them together.” He said. “David has been actively taking part in a number of initiatives to help young people around the world to enjoy a better life, while Samsung’s London 2012 marketing campaign will also place great importance on the value of engaging youth.

And to this end, we’re delighted that David will be supporting our goal to extend the Olympic Games spectator experience to fans throughout the world using our leading smart mobile technology.”

And here’s the dead ball maestro himself:

“I'm very proud to be part of the team that brought the Olympics to my home city, London,” Beckham said. “It is one of the greatest events in the world.  Working with a globally respected brand, like Samsung, our aim will be to help more and more people to enjoy and share the excitement of the London 2012 Olympic Games."

STOP PRESS: has learnt that plans are already under way in the Sydney office to arrange a PR visit to Australia for David Beckham. Should Beckham visit Australia and conduct PR for Samsung that would be a provide fillip for the brand.
