Smeg will introduce a new collection of Diamond series dishwashers later this year with several innovations including an inverter motor for increased energy efficiency, as well as improved wash performance and flexibility.

The new dishwasher collection, designed and manufactured by Smeg Italy, also features new wash programs with self-clean to clean the interior and the hydraulic system, green-express, a fast cycle with low energy consumption, delicate wash for streak-free fine glassware and silent wash for even quieter dishwashing.

Fifty years ago, Smeg manufactured and sold the first Australian dishwasher, the Niagara, under the Smeg Dishlex brand. The appliance began the penetration of dishwashers into Australian homes, and decades later Smeg continues to remain at the forefront of dishwasher design and technology.

Prior to the dishwasher becoming a common household appliance in the 1970s, many Australian families wanted a machine to carry out the recurring task of washing up dishes, glassware and cooking utensils. John Wells produced the first Australian dishwasher, Dishlex, in 1948.

In 1971, John’s son Brian Wells was searching Europe for dishwashing manufacturers when he met members of Smeg in Northern Italy. There were strong synergies between Brian and Smeg’s values as two like-minded family businesses.

After searching for a manufacturer for quite some time, Brian Wells eventually met with Smeg export manager, Emer Zavaroni.

“The business values between my family business and Smeg’s family company were so similar, it was a great alignment and helped drive such a positive outcome for the product,” he said.

Smeg Australia managing director, Wayne Campbell said it has been an incredible journey of technology transformation since the launch of the first dishwasher.

“Today, consumers are looking for a dishwasher that is easy to use, produces great results and is efficient in terms of energy and water. We launched the first 6-star WELS rated dishwasher and continue to listen to consumers in terms of flexibility and efficiency to ensure we continue to adapt to their needs.”

Along with the wash and dry systems, Smeg has also been at the forefront of basket design and adjustability to accommodate all shapes and sizes. The flexi-duo cutlery tray folds and slides to provide free space for tall glassware, cutlery and utensils.
