Apple Australia has applied for a trademark on the words “Made For iPhone” in an image containing this text and a graphic outline of its iPhone device. The application was made to IP Australia on 5 December 2012 and is currently under examination.

This trademark application has been made under Class 10 of the IP Australia trademark goods classification, which covers “Surgical, medical, dental and veterinary apparatus and instruments; artificial limbs, eyes and teeth; orthopedic articles; [and] suture materials”.

UPDATED: Apple has made similar trademark requests for "Made for iPad" and "Made for iPod", both in the same intellectual property Class.

This choice of Class is interesting as other goods classifications are more applicable to Apple’s principal product lines.

Class 9, which covers photographic equipment; sound and image recording and transmitting devices; computers; and software is, in particular, the most applicable to Apple’s current product ranges.

According to the “Trade Mark Details” of Apple Australia’s pending application, seen by Current.com.au, the trademarked image will be used to distinguish:

“A full line of medical accessories for use with mobile phones, handheld computers, and portable and handheld digital electronic devices for recording, organizing, transmitting, manipulating, and reviewing text, data, audio and video files; hearing aids; assistive listening devices for the hearing impaired; hearing enhancement products; acoustic apparatus and parts therefor for the hearing impaired.”

Current.com.au has contacted Apple Australia with a request for more information.

Meanwhile, Apple overnight announced the release of a new 128GB iPad with Retina Display model, which will go on sale in the US on 5 February 2013. The Wi-Fi only version of this new iPad is US $799, while the Wi-Fi plus Cellular model is US $929.
