Optus has become Australia’s first telecommunications provider to integrate Mastercard’s digital identity service ID, to provide customers with a simpler and more secure way to prove their identity online and in-store.

Optus will progressively offer the service to customers who have downloaded the My Optus app. Once a digital identity is created, it can be used when purchasing a new device, making account changes, buying additional services and more, replacing physical documents such as passports or driver licenses.

The service gives customers full control over what information is shared and can only be accessed once the user verifies their identity using biometric capabilities built into their mobile device.

Optus vice president for digital consumer, Vaughan Paul said the partnership with Mastercard provides customers with the option to embrace the benefits of a digital identity, not only when interacting with the telco, but with other organisations also.

“ID solves pain points such as protecting customer identity, while at the same time simplifying the verification process, giving them more control over their personal information and streamlining transactions.”

Mastercard Australasia division president, Richard Wormald said the partnership will provide a unique experience for customers that will better protect their personal identity while enhancing the onboarding and checkout experience.

“Bringing Optus into the ID ecosystem is an exciting step in Mastercard’s digital journey. The partnership is a testament to the trust industry leaders and innovators are placing in our global framework.
