MOD Appliances has seen an increasing trend towards customers asking about how much plastic is used in packaging prior to purchase.
In response, the company thought about ways to make its packaging more eco-friendly by switching the plastic packaging to tissue paper instead of bio-plastic, which is only biodegradable in the right conditions.
From there, MOD Appliances sourced the materials and experimented on how to use the paper to replace the plastic.
“Once we looked more closely at the issue, we found that much of the plastic packaging wasn’t even required, and where it was needed, tissue paper was a great substitute,” marketing manager, Toni-Marie Aston told Appliance Retailer.
“We worked with an external designer to help with the print design for the paper and have since removed as much plastic as possible and replaced with recycled biodegradable paper where necessary.
“The largest plastic bag was used to protect our juicers from being scratched in transport and this was replaced with a produce bag made from sustainable jute also known as burlap. We decided to take a piece of required packaging that would otherwise go to waste and turn it into a reusable household item,” she said.
