The big three: UHD, OLED and Curved

LG’s newest talking point in the television category is a model which combines 4K Ultra HD TV with OLED technology. It’s also curved. The big news is that this is the first time LG has combined 4K UHD and OLED in Australia. Generally the other 4K TVs launched in Australia this year have favoured LED over OLED.

Australia is one of only a handful of countries globally that LG will release the products to this year.

  • The 65-inch EC970T, RRP $9,999, will be available from November at selected outlets.
  • The 77-inch EG970T, RRP $22,999,  will be available at selected outlets before the end of the year.

“If you ask me about 4K Ultra HD TV, I’ll tell you it is amazing,” said Lambro Skropidis, general marketing manager at LG Electronics Australia. “But combined with OLED, I’ll tell you it’s a game-changer. OLED really is the future of television and home entertainment… and the future is here, right now.”

LG have preemptively answered the question most consumers will be thinking: Why is combining 4K Ultra HD and OLED such a big deal?

At a whopping four-times the definition of Full HD (in technical terms, 4K Ultra HD TV is 3840 x 2160), LG’s 4K Ultra HD TV alone delivers amazing clarity to TV screens. This we know. But then there’s LG’s patented 4 colour (WRGB) pixel organic light-emitting diode technology (aka OLED), a panel technology that provides vibrant colour and brilliant whites with infinite contrast.

So the question was, how do you possibly make these two super-powered visual giants any better? Obviously, put them together. There are only two TVs earmarked for the market that deliver the 4C’s of OLED technology along with 4K Ultra HD definition, and it’s these beauties.

OLED for Everyone!

LG is attempting to woo a wider segment of the market by launching a curved OLED TV at a lower price-point.  The 55-inch curved OLED TV (Model 55EC930T) will be available at Harvey Norman, Bing Lee, JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys, and other selected outlets for RRP $3,999. The new 55EC930T model is also the first LG OLED TV with Smart TV powered by webOS.

This comes after LG has repeatedly reduced the price of its  flagship 55-inch Curved OLED TV. The brand says the lower prices for OLED have come from its ability to efficiently manufacture the technology.

“LG is taking this premium technology and opening it up to the average Australian,” said Skropidis. “LG’s improved manufacturing efficiencies now allow us to sell OLED TVs — previously considered a ‘future’ technology — today. Not only is the price-point lower than a year ago, making it more affordable, I can tell you that LG’s OLED TVs have picture quality and design benefits that simply elevate the home entertainment experience to whole new levels.”

More 4K Curves

Rounding out the television announcements from LG is its first Curved 4K Ultra HD TV (UC970T). The TVs come with LG’s intuitive Smart TV platform, webOS and will most likely match up against Samsung’s range of UHD Curved Smart TVs.

LG’s 79-inch (model UG880T) is set to launch in December for RRP of $10,999.
