Canon Australia has retained its position as the number one selling brand in the Australian digital compact camera industry after receiving the GfK Number One Award for 2008.

Both Canon’s IXUS and PowerShot brands were awarded the prestigious position, based on unit sales from January to December 2008. This marks the second year in a row Canon has won the award.

“We’re very happy to retain the No.1 ranking in such a competitive category,” said Darren Ryan, general manager – marketing, consumer imaging products group, Canon Australia. “Canon is renowned for its leading technology in the digital still camera category, but we could not have stayed on top without our depth of consumer understanding and increasingly sophisticated product segmentation.”

Despite the current slowdown in the economy Canon are confident that the category will continue to grow in 2009.

“Our research tells us that Australians are continuing to take more photos and that digital imaging is becoming an increasingly important part of their lives. We’re expecting to see the digital still camera category grow in 2009 and we will benefit from this as a category leader,” Ryan said.

One of the biggest contributors to Canon’s success in the category according to Ryan is the company’s focus on consumer needs.

“Canon will continue to be led by consumer needs in 2009, offering added value and helping consumers achieve their creative outcomes,” he said.

Ryan was also confident the new IXUS and PowerShot ranges just announced will help to further their success in the coming year.

“We’re expecting big things from the 2009 line-up, which includes our first waterproof PowerShot and our slimmest-ever IXUS model.
