Samsung Electronics has officially unveiled its ultra-modern curved OLED display in Korea overnight, with the new panel commanding a 15 million Korean Won sale price, equivalent to just over AUD $14,000.

Like other OLED panels, the display features thousands of organic light emitting diodes which eliminate the need for backlighting and promise “richer and brighter images compared to current TVs” according to a global statement from Samsung. However, unlike other standard panels, the new Curved OLED TV features a concave shape — dubbed the “Timeless Arena” design — that “delivers immaculate true-to-life pictures from any angle or vantage point”.

Speaking at the Seoul launch of the new TV, Samsung Electronics’ executive vice president of Samsung Visual Display, Hyunsuk Kim, talked up the unique viewing experience that the product offered.

“We are proud to be able to deliver on our promise of bringing our Curved OLED TV to the market,” he said. “With this product, we’re able to offer consumers an immersive viewing experience and flawless picture quality.

“The Curved OLED TV is a ground-breaking future-proof product that pioneers a new era of TV viewing.”

Curved OLED has been somewhat of a new frontier in the TV category, with Samsung showing off the technology at CES in January, and LG unveiling a curved OLED display at a local event in Sydney in May. Samsung’s Korean compatriot used the launch of its 2013 TV line-up to show off a curved OLED design, alongside Ultra HD panels and a more traditional LED TV offering, however the brand had no details on pricing or availability.

While there has been no word from Samsung Electronics Australia about local availability for the Curved OLED TV, the Korean pricing indicates that it’s not quite on the same level as Samsung’s high-end S9 Ultra HD display, which is available through select channels for $40,000.
