Dyson has announced the launch of the PencilVac, its slimmest vacuum cleaner to date, measuring just 38 millimetres in diameter.
Appliance Retailer has contacted Dyson Australia for details regarding distribution, release timing and pricing – and all details were unavailable at the time of publication.
The cordless vacuum is equipped with a number of new technologies, including a four-cone brush bar head designed to remove long hair without tangling.
The PencilVac introduces Dyson’s Fluffycones cleaner head, which incorporates two conical brush bars rotating in opposite directions.
The design allows the cleaner head to glide both forward and backward, delivering consistent cleaning performance in either direction. The cones extend beyond the edges of the head, enabling the vacuum to reach right up to skirting boards—an area many vacuums struggle to clean effectively.
“I have long wanted to make a vacuum of only 38mm diameter. But first, we needed to develop our most powerful Hyperdymium motor at only 28mm diameter to achieve such a slender machine,” James Dyson, Founder of Dyson, said.
The result is the 140,000RPM Hyperdymium motor, capable of generating 55 air watts of suction while fitting within the slim 38mm chassis.
To maintain suction performance and improve dust management, Dyson also introduced a new two-stage linear dust separation system.
The PencilVac captures 99.99 percent of particles as small as 0.3 microns and compresses dust to reduce the frequency of bin emptying. The vacuum also features a redesigned bin ejection mechanism that plunges waste while simultaneously wiping the shroud, aiming to improve hygiene during disposal.
The vacuum weighs just 1.8kg and flattens to a height of 95mm, allowing it to clean under low furniture. A laser-like illumination at the front and rear of the cleaner head helps highlight invisible dust on hard floors in both directions.
The PencilVac also includes an LCD screen that displays real-time information such as power mode and remaining run time.
The device is Dyson’s first cordless vacuum to connect to the MyDyson app, providing users with battery status updates, maintenance reminders, and cleaning tips. Additional features include a 30-minute runtime per charge, a magnetic charging dock with onboard tool storage, and a rotating combi-crevice tool for more targeted cleaning.
“Engineering our smallest and fastest vacuum motor is no simple feat. It was more than miniaturising every piece of technology. It is a precise integration of motor design, electronics, software, and hardware, all working together seamlessly,” John Churchill, Chief Technology Officer at Dyson, said.
“At Dyson, we reimagine what engineering can do by refusing to accept trade-offs. We are uncompromising in our approach, from innovation and engineering to manufacturing. From a new motor, a new paradigm in cleaner heads, to a new separation system, the Dyson PencilVac represents our most advanced engineering to date.”
