CommSec: Economy in “good shape”

Despite the mild 0.2% lift in spending in August, in comparison to 0.4% growth in July and 0.5% in June, the Australian economy is still in good shape and continuing to grow, according to CommSec chief economist and author of the BSI report, Craig James.

Fujitsu General global air-con sales to soar

Fujitsu General president Etsuro Saito plans to increase sales in the company’s air-conditioning business by 79% from fiscal 2014, to generate 300 billion yen ($3.48 billion) in sales abroad in the year ending March 2020, according to a Nikkei report. The company will strengthen marketing efforts in Europe, the U.S., the Middle East and Australia, in order to achieve its goal.

Young heroes want to defeat e-waste

TechCollect, an industry-funded, free to the public national recycling service for computers, computer accessories and TVs, has revealed the 2015 winners of its Young E-Waste Hero program. Three students demonstrated their understanding of the impact that e-waste has on the environment, winning $1750 worth of cash prizes.

Accounting scandal costs Toshiba $750,000

Japan’s stock exchange has ordered Toshiba to pay a record fine of 91.2 million yen ($750,000) in the wake of its $2 billion accounting scandal, according to the Financial Times. Toshiba is also expected to face another fine from Japan’s financial regulators. It has been reported that the Tokyo Stock Exchange has placed the stock “on alert”, which requires the company to file a report in 2016 on its internal controls improvements. If the company fails to do so, shares will be delisted.

JB to fulfil gender equity targets

JB Hi-Fi says low turnover in middle management roles are a major obstacle in its push to improve the number of women in its company, as it fails to achieve gender equity targets set out in 2012. However, the retailer is reportedly set to turn this around with an action plan with part time and flexible work practices and regular pay reviews.
