Strong growth in the appliance sector is set to continue, with research from Shopify finding close to showing to a quarter (24%) of Australians are planning to prioritise shopping for electronics in the next six months.

According to Shopify APAC managing director Shaun Broughton, electronics and home appliances are consistent strong performers and it is anticipated that this will continue well into 2025.

“We’ve observed a notable spike among specific electronics and electronics-related categories on our platform in December as shoppers indulged in their hobbies, bought last minute gifts and wound down for the holidays.

“Sales of portable game console skins rose by a substantial 132.8%, while tablet computer parts (43.7%), game racing wheels (42%), turntables and record players (39.5%) and radios (38.5%) all saw spikes in month-on-month sales.

“Historically, Australians have tended to buy smaller electronics (like earphones) online while larger and more expensive products (like fridges and other white goods) are purchased in-store. However, as shopping experiences and retail innovation are constantly evolving, so are consumer behaviours.

“As Aussies become more discerning with their spending in today’s climate, it’s crucial that businesses adopt a unified commerce approach, understand their customers’ unique shopping journeys and deliver seamless, consistent experiences across every channel.”

The research from Shopify follows the release of data by the Australian Bureau of Statistics showing household goods retailing rose by 1.6 per cent in December 2024 despite Australian retail turnover falling by 0.1 per cent.
