Over 12 million Australian consumers intend to shop local for Black Friday, according to a YouGov survey commissioned by cloud POS software firm, Vend. Almost three quarters of Millennials (72%) said they will support local independent retailers this Friday, followed by Gen X (64%) and Baby Boomers (55%).

An analysis of over 3,000 Australian independent retailers using Vend data reveals that retailers earned $3,082 last Black Friday on average – over double (144%) the daily estimate for independent retailers last year ($1,261). Shoppers spent a total of $10.67 million on Black Friday last year, which equates to $22,226 ringing through tills every minute at independent stores using Vend.

While the retail industry faces difficult headwinds, Vend’s own insights reveals Black Friday is resonating more and more with Australian retailers as an important sales event. Over the past three years, the number of transactions made at independent retailers on Black Friday increased by almost a quarter (22%), while their revenue increased by over a third (36%).

Shoppers in New South Wales were the busiest independent bargain hunters in Australia (52,423 sales), followed by counterparts in Victoria (44,264) and Queensland (40,337) on Black Friday in 2018. South Australia experienced the most significant growth in revenue at 126% between 2016 and 2018. The increase represents almost three times more than the next state, Queensland.
