For the retail industry.

The Australian Retailers Association (ARA) has congratulated Scott Morrison as Australia’s new Prime Minister, and look forward to long-term certainty and stability in the retail sector.

ARA executive director, Russell Zimmerman said uncertainty is never good for business and retailers are looking forward to a strong and stable future.

“With retail trade averaging a 2.7% growth this year, retailers are looking for long-term certainty and stability, as stability enables retailers to make long-term decisions, grow their business and hire more staff,” Zimmerman said.

“We believe this strong and stable Government will support retailers through the current fluctuating trading environment and assist the ARA’s mission in transforming retail from a stepping-stone industry, to a long-term and fulfilling career.”

Zimmerman also said the Prime Minister’s new Cabinet looks promising with the new ministry targeting problem areas in the retail industry.

“Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s first ministry will be a great opportunity for retailers across the country with Michaelia Cash appointed as Minister for Small Business, Skills and Vocational Education,” he said.

“This strong focus on small business and education and training will enable retailers to increase employment and training in the sector to ensure prosperity and growth for the retail industry.”

The ARA are pleased to see the Prime Minister pinpointing energy as a significant issue, splitting the portfolio in two, and appointing Melissa Price as the Minister for the Environment and Angus Taylor as the Minister for Energy.

“With escalating energy prices coupled with rising tenancy costs, retailers are finding it hard to keep their heads above water. The ARA will be looking to Scott Morrison’s new Cabinet to reduce these rising costs and enable retailers to focus on using their profits to hire more staff,” he added.
