Sony, LG and Samsung all honoured in Canstar Blue 2014 TV survey

Canstar Blue has announced the winners of its 2014 television survey, for the first time splitting the category into three divisions — LCD, LED and 3D TVs — to help consumers make a more informed decision about the TV technology driving their purchase decision.

Sony, LG and Samsung topped one division each, with just over 1,000 people who bought a new flat screen TV in the last 2 years surveyed.

For LCD TVs, LG took out the honours, having the most satisfied customers overall and receiving five stars across all categories. Last year LG was awarded Canstar Blue’s Most Satisfied Customers Award – Televisions.

The survey found that 45 per cent of the respondents bought a TV larger than 50 inches and for 43 per cent the energy rating of a TV was a major factor in their purchase decision.

According to the survey, 30 per cent download TV content rather than waiting for it to be broadcast and 64 per cent think overseas-produced content takes too long to reach Australian screens.

    Dear Tess,
Please explain the difference between LCD and LED TV’s.
If they both have and LED backlight, is there any difference?
It seems to me that the ‘artificial’ difference you have created in this article is misleading at best and denigrating at worst.

    Thanks,

    Greg.

      Hi Greg,

Thanks for writing in. LCD TVs have LCD panels and CCFL backlighting while LED TVs have LCD panels with LED lighting. Canstar Blue came up with these categories and we reporting their results – we didn’t run the survey – and I do feel that the three categories CB has chosen are a little bit quaint.

When LED-backlit LCD screens first started being released in the mid-to-late 2000s, suppliers referred to these models as ‘LED TVs’. This caused some consternation between some brands – most memorably Sony and Samsung – and we reported that extensively at the time. I remember going out to visit Sony at a retailer road show in Homebush and being subjected to quite a polemic about how misleading Samsung were being in their naming of these TVs. Over time, however, the use of LCD for CCFL backlighting and LED for LED backlighting stuck and that is what Canstar has gone with.

      Thanks
