SYDNEY, NSW: In the game of gaming there are no prizes for humility and today Sony has released GfK figures to demonstrate its dominance in the gaming arena for hardware, software, peripherals and online.

A statement from Sony today said that the PS3 platform (incorporating hardware, software and peripherals but not digital sales), “achieved the number one place in terms of value and year-on-year value growth, representing 27 per cent of the approximate $1.7 billion industry,” for the calendar year from 2009 to 2010.

Other figures included a gaming hardware market share for sales of 26.5 per cent, similar to PS3 software sales accounting for 26.7 per cent of the industry revenue for 2010.

Michael Ephraim, managing director for Sony Computer Entertainment Australia, said: “PlayStation 3 as a platform continues to outperform and grow, even during the double digit industry wide downturn last year. Our consumers are responding to the increased entertainment content offering, from both our company and our network of partners, enjoying the benefits derived from our ongoing technical innovation, and also the more connected network experiences we continue to offer.”
