SYDNEY, NSW: Myer has decided to completely exit the whitegoods category in favour of outdoor furniture and more fashion lines as part of its focus on the redistribution of store space allocation.

As a department store up against specialty appliance retailers Myer could not achieve the competitive advantage, said a Myer spokesperson to Current.com.au.

Myer corporate affairs manager Damien Glass confirmed that the exit from whitegoods had taken effect over the past month, across stores nationwide.

“White goods is a category that is not generating the returns that we want,” said Glass.

“I think there are a lot of options for consumers for where they can buy fridges and other whitegoods from, though I’d like to add that we are keeping small appliances like coffee machines.”

The reallocation of space has been extended to expanding categories like furniture, including a new outdoor range.

Myer posted weak sales resutls of 0.7 per cent for FY2010 and like most publicly listed retailers cited the cycling of the government's stimulus package as reason.
