Motorola Australia has confirmed the release of its latest Android 2.1 handset the Milestone. If it looks familiar to you, that’s because it is actually the Droid, which was a hugely popular release over in the US last year.

The Motorola Milestone is being released exclusively via Optus on 7 July and has been eagerly anticipated by many Australian consumers.

“The Motorola Milestone breaks down the barriers for consumers to create and consume media on the go – providing a rich mobile web experience, superior messaging and top-of-the-line multi-media features,” said Timo Brouwer, managing director, Motorola ANZ and South Pacific.

“We designed Milestone to enhance consumer experiences – and its full screen web browsing experience, ability to juggle between multiple apps, and suite of Google applications deliver. The global anticipation and demand for Milestone has just blown us away – and we are excited to announce its arrival in Australia today.”

The new addition is powered by an Android 2.1 operating system, has a really thin QWERTY slider keypad and a multi-touch 3.7 inch display. Other features include a cortex A8 processor, 5 megapixel camera, Motorola Media Link and Motorola Phone Portal.

There is also an optional Driver’s Pack accessory which includes a phone cradle, car mount and in-car charger.

The Motorola Milestone will be available through Optus for $0 on a yes social $49 plan over 24 months.
